The Sea Wall Collection at the Geo Café

There’s a particular pleasure in spotting blades of granite in the shallows as the incoming tide gathers momentum and begins to build its power, roaring as it smashes and splashes onto the ancient coastline it’s gradually eroding as though it intends to ultimately pound the rocks below the sands. These natural groynes are, for me, an absolute delight to draw, but never more so than when they are being drenched by the breaking waves above.

The Sea Wall Collection at the Geo Café

Studying the patterns that individual waves trace as they relentlessly ebb, gather their energy, then crash upon rocks below is, I find, quite mesmerising. ‘Mordardh’ is Cornish for ‘breaking waves’ - but do the waves truly break? Or is it the rocks beneath that eventually break under the ocean’s constant pounding? It’s all a part of the collective spirit of the sea. A cycle I’ll never tire of watching - or depicting in my art.

Each and every wave is different.  No two waves are ever exactly the same, and witnessing the very instant when the water vigorously swells to that point of near collapse only to cascade energetically onto rocks that dared to impede its path, is very much akin to seeing an explosion. It’s that split second of impact I’ve aimed to capture with my mark-making here. Perhaps you can hear the crash?

The Sea Wall Collection at the Geo Café

Some seas appear to have an almost sculptural quality to them, seeming to hold their spiralling, funnelling form for so much more than mere moments before they break. With this artwork, I hoped to evoke a sense of the raw power, energy and movement of a single incoming wave, frozen for those fractions of a second in the tunnelling motion that leads back into its inevitable cascade of frothing bubbles and spindrift.
