The inspiration for this charcoal drawing was a photograph taken by my cousin, who, like a large part of my family, has lived in Alberta, Canada, for most of his life. I spent part of my childhood there too, and learnt to love a very different outdoors to the one I experience and adore equally here in the UK. I have been in the Rockies in deep snow when all that is around you is the splendid hush of the pine forest. You can almost hear the woodland breathe, as the snowflakes take their time to grace its boughs. For me, charcoal was the obvious choice of medium to allow me to evoke such tranquillity and restful solitude.
